Dry Shade in the NC Piedmont: What Actually Grows Under Mature Oaks
Almost every shade garden plant list assumes moist shade — a woodland floor with leaf litter and steady moisture. That is not what you have under a mature oak.
Under an established tree the roots take the water and the canopy takes the light. That is dry shade, and it is a different growing condition entirely.
Hosta, foamflower, Japanese painted fern, wild ginger, astilbe. All genuinely shade plants. All documented by NC State as needing consistent moisture. Put them under an established tree and they decline for two seasons and die, and the homeowner concludes they have a black thumb.
Read this before you buy a single plant
The plants are the easy part. Dry-shade plantings usually fail not because of the list, but because of what people do to the tree while installing it.
Do not add soil over tree roots
This is the single most common way homeowners kill a mature tree while trying to landscape under it.
NC State Extension is direct that cutting or filling around roots will weaken and eventually kill valuable trees, and NC Cooperative Extension lists burying the root collar with fill dirt among the practices that kill trees.
That rules out the usual instinct — building a raised bed or spreading four inches of topsoil under the canopy to make planting easier. One NC county Extension shade booklet does suggest raised beds over shallow roots; the arboriculture guidance is clearer and we would follow that instead. No imported soil layer inside the dripline.
How to plant there instead
NC State's Extension Gardener Handbook is specific. Do not till within the drip line. Instead:
Dig individual holes for a few spreading plants
Use young plants — quart-sized containers rather than gallon — so only small holes are needed
Choose long-lived plants to minimise disturbance to the roots
That last point is why the list below leans toward things that spread on their own. You want to disturb that ground once.
How far out the roots actually go

Further than people think, and shallower. NC Cooperative Extension puts 80 percent of all roots in the top 12 inches of soil, and root loss translates to canopy loss roughly one for one — lose 50 percent of the roots to construction and 50 percent of the canopy will die.
The published protection zone is 1.25 feet of radius for every inch of trunk diameter. An 8-inch trunk means 10 feet. A 20-inch oak means 25 feet. Root disturbance is advised no closer than 5.5 times the trunk diameter at breast height.
Mulch instead of soil
NC State's approach: remove turf under the canopy and replace it with two inches of mulch, in a doughnut from the trunk out toward the dripline, to stop turf and weeds competing.
Two inches, not more. If the mulch is too deep, roots grow up into the mulch and become more vulnerable to drought damage. And keep it off the root flare.
The plants that actually take dry shade
Every entry below is documented by NC State with explicit drought and shade language. Not inferred.
Small trees and large shrubs
Eastern hophornbeam (Ostrya virginiana), 20-40 ft, deep to full shade, NC native. Tolerates drought and heavy clay; does not demand much light and prefers partial to deep shade.
Blackhaw viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium), 12-15 ft, native. Resistant to heat and drought. Will grow in deep shade but rarely blooms without sun.
American holly (Ilex opaca), 40-60 ft, native, evergreen with red berries. Tolerates occasionally wet or dry soil but not flooding. Too much shade thins the foliage.
Fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus), 12-30 ft, native. Tolerates clay and some drought.
Shrubs
Mapleleaf viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium), 4-6 ft, native. Drought tolerant once established and more shade tolerant than most viburnums.
Japanese plum yew (Cephalotaxus harringtonia), 5-10 ft, not native. Drought and heat tolerant once established, tolerates shade better than most needled evergreens, and effectively deer-proof.
Aucuba (Aucuba japonica), 6-10 ft, not native. Partial to deep shade is its best environment; tolerates poor soils and urban conditions.
Coralberry (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus), 2-4 ft, native. Heat, drought and soil compaction tolerant.
Fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatica), 2-6 ft, native. Tolerant of drought, erosion, black walnut, clay soil, dry soil and shallow rocky soil.
Strawberry bush (Euonymus americanus), 4-6 ft, native. Wide soil tolerance including clay. Note: a deer favourite.
Cedar-glade St. Johnswort (Hypericum frondosum), 3-4 ft, native. Drought tolerant once established, but needs 3 to 4 hours of sun.
Perennials
Barrenwort (Epimedium species). Deep shade and drought conditions are not an issue for established plants.
Crested iris (Iris cristata), native. NC State describes it as growing in the difficult-to-manage dry shade.
White wood aster (Eurybia divaricata), native. Shade, deer and drought tolerant.
American alumroot (Heuchera americana), native, evergreen foliage. Drought tolerant.
Bluestem goldenrod (Solidago caesia), native. Resistant to deer, dry soil and wet soil.
Stinking hellebore (Helleborus foetidus), not native. Drought tolerant once established; best in partial to full shade.
Groundcovers
Woodland stonecrop (Sedum ternatum), native. Tolerates shade better than most sedums, plus drought, heat, and rocky poor soils. Seldom needs watering.
Allegheny spurge (Pachysandra procumbens), native. Forms a dense mat that happily grows under trees. Resistant to drought and heat. This is the native alternative to the Japanese pachysandra usually sold.
Creeping phlox (Phlox stolonifera), native. Very drought tolerant once established, but keep it moist the first year.
Ferns
Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides), native, evergreen. Grown in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in part to full shade.
Ebony spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron), native. Dry to medium moisture; suitable for dry, rocky, shady crevices.
Hay-scented fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula), native. Spreads rapidly and is fairly drought tolerant. Warning: it can prevent woodland tree seedlings from growing.
Sedges and grasses
Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica), native. Its ideal location is dry to moist shade, and NC State calls it an ideal turf alternative in dry shade areas, mown once or twice a season.
Bottlebrush grass (Elymus hystrix), native. Drought, shade and erosion tolerant; adapts to moist to dry clay, sandy or loamy soils.
Creeping sedge (Carex laxiculmis), native. Drought tolerant once established and will tolerate dry shade.
If you only take three things from this list
Pennsylvania sedge for the ground under trees. NC State calls it an ideal turf alternative in dry shade areas, mown once or twice a season. It is the honest answer to grass will not grow under my oak.
Mapleleaf viburnum for the shrub layer. Drought tolerant once established and more shade tolerant than any other viburnum.
Christmas fern for texture. Evergreen, native, and the only common fern NC State describes as growing in dry to medium moisture.
Sold for shade. Will die in dry shade.
All of these are real shade plants. None of them tolerate drought under a tree. Each note is what NC State actually says about its moisture requirement.
Hosta (Hosta species) — drainage field lists good drainage only; performs well in dappled shade and moist soils rich in organic matter.
Foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia) — not tolerant of drought conditions; needs moist, humus-rich soils.
Japanese painted fern (Athyrium niponicum) — prefers moist, rich soil with high organic content. No drought claim at all.
Ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) — naturally occurs in heavy, moist soil and prefers constant moisture.
Cinnamon fern (Osmundastrum cinnamomeum) — easily grown in medium to wet soils; may go dormant in dry soil.
Canadian wild ginger (Asarum canadense) — poor drought tolerance; performs best in soil that maintains constant moisture.
Heartleaf ginger (Hexastylis arifolia) — moist, well-drained soil that is not allowed to dry out.
Golden ragwort (Packera aurea) — medium to wet soils that should not be allowed to dry out.
If a garden centre points you at any of these for the ground under a mature oak, they are not wrong about the shade. They are wrong about the water.

Where dry shade turns out to be a different problem
Occasionally the ground under a tree is bare for a reason that is not shade or drought at all: compacted subsoil left by a builder, a root system already damaged by grade change, or water that arrives fast and leaves nothing behind. Those are worth ruling out before you buy plants twice.
