Your wilting plant might be drowning
Here is the trap that kills more houseplants than every pest and disease combined.
A plant sitting in waterlogged soil cannot take up water. The roots suffocate — roots need oxygen, and saturated soil has none — and damaged roots stop moving water into the plant. So the leaves droop.
The plant looks thirsty. It is, in a sense, thirsty. And the instinct, the overwhelming and entirely reasonable instinct, is to water it.
Which is the one thing guaranteed to finish it off.

Telling them apart
Put a finger into the soil, to the second knuckle, about two inches down. That is the entire diagnostic and it takes ten seconds.
Dry two inches down and the plant is genuinely thirsty. Supporting signs: the pot feels light, leaf edges are crisp and papery rather than soft, and the soil may have shrunk away from the sides of the pot. It will perk up within hours of watering.
Damp two inches down and you have the other problem. Supporting signs: the pot feels heavy, the leaves are limp and soft rather than crisp, the lower leaves are yellowing, there may be a sour smell from the soil, and you may have fungus gnats — which breed in persistently wet soil and are one of the more reliable tells.
Wet soil and a wilting plant means stop watering. Move it somewhere with more light and airflow, and let it dry out. If it is badly gone, take it out of the pot and look at the roots: healthy roots are firm and pale, drowned ones are brown, soft and smell bad.
Why the weekly schedule is the root cause
“Water every Sunday” is a rule about the calendar. A plant's water use is a function of light, temperature, humidity, pot size, pot material and season — every one of which changes.
The same plant that needs water every five days in July might need it every three weeks in December, when light is low and it has largely stopped growing. Run the July schedule through the winter and you will drown it, slowly, while doing what you believe is the right thing.
The fix is a small change of wording that changes everything:
Check on a schedule. Water on demand.
The schedule is for you, because you will otherwise forget the plant exists until it is desperate. The decision is for the plant, made with a finger in the soil. Those are two different things and most care routines collapse them into one.
The pot-size version of the same mistake
There is a related error worth knowing, because the mechanism is identical.
When a plant outgrows its pot, the temptation is to move it somewhere much bigger so you do not have to do it again. But a small root system in a large volume of soil cannot use all that soil. The unused parts stay wet, because nothing is drawing water out of them, and you get exactly the stagnant, oxygen-poor conditions that rot roots.
Go up one pot size. It is the same physics as the perched water table that ruins badly sited garden beds — wet soil that nothing is pulling water out of. Only the scale changes.
When to stop guessing
If a plant is declining and you cannot work out why, most county Cooperative Extension offices run a plant diagnostic service, and many are free. A correct identification saves more plants than any product on the shelf, and it is a resource almost nobody uses.
